Identifying BIM Uses

BIM uses were developed according to phases: Planning, Design, Construction, and Operations

BIM uses should be identified for each individual project based on team experience, orgaizational characteristics, and project characteristics associated with BIM goals.

Team Experience

The team experience associated with each BIM use is vital to the success of implementation. Assumption: The learning curve for implementation significantly decreases after two projects have been complete with a particular BIM use.

Organizational Characteristics

Specific organizational characteristics significantly affect the use of BIM on a project:
-IT Department support
-Software Training
-BIM Team developed

Project Characteristics

The project details must be reviewed to determine what characteristics will effect BIM implementation in each phase.
-Surrounding Charcteristics (Access, Structures, Infastructure)
-Site Characteristics (Existing Conditions, Size, Location)
-Building Characteristics (Structural, Architectural, MEP)
